1. Captian Shankar Rao S Walkar was born on 8th March 1943 in Kadgaon
Village of Kolhapur District in Maharshtra. On 15th Jun 1969. He was
commissoned to the MADRAS Regiment at the age of 26 uyears.
2. INDO-PAK WAR : 16 DEC 1971 : During the 1971 was, there
were various operations and skirmishes on western front between India and
Pakistan. Captain Shanka Walkar was serving as a mortar officer in 18
MADRAS Regiment. On 16th December 1971, the battalion reached Hingore
Tar after advancing 42 miles. Here the battalion came under the attack kdue to
heavy shelling by the enemy. As Mortar officer of the battalion, Capt Walkar
courageously walked up to each compay position of the battalion to tie up for
defensive tasks. In doing so, he was hit twice by splinters. Undeterred by
injuries, he refused to be evacuated and carried on his task with full
determination. The enemy shelling continued for the whole night and the nesxt
morning two companies of the battalion were assaulted. Nevertheless, Capt
Walkar continued his task of showing a rare dispaly of of courage and
succeeded in bringing down effective mortar fire on to the enemy and inflicted
heavy causalities. During this heroic act, he also shot four enemy personnel
and kept fighting bravely until he succumbed t his injuries and made the
supreme sacrifice.
3. Captain Walkar was a valiant and committed soldier who displayed
exceptional gallantry and heroism for which he was awarded Mahavir Chakra
Posthumously.
