1.15 Maratha LI under the command of Lt Col H C Sachdev on 08 Oct 1971was ordered to occupy defences in ’Mudh’ on Dhusi Bandh (Amritsar) as part of 96Infantry Brigade/15 Infantry Division Sector (Western Theatre). On the night of ¾December, the enemy attacked BSF posts and captured Fatehpur and Burj on DhusiBandh. This success proved very vital to the enemy and gave him a firm base forlaunching further operations. To regain lost territory, two platoons of 15 Maratha LIsupported by a troop of armour launched a successful and daring counter attach inbroad day lighton Burj and recaptured it on 6 06 December 1971. Dhusi from Tur toVera was also capturd after a Subsequent counter attack by the Marathas. A seriesof counter attacks by the enemy to retake Burj were repulsed. This was the acton inwar by this young battalion and its soldiers proved their worth beyond a shadow ofdoubt. For their exemplary action the unit was honoured with the Battle Honour”BURJ” and Theatre Honour”PUNJAB”2.No 2760401 Sep Pandurang Salunkhe of 15 MARATHA LI, which was taskedto launch an assault on Tur (Amritsar Sector) on 06 December. While our tanksadvanced for the assaullt, a grave threat arose due to effective enemy nti-tank fire.Sep Pandurang Salunkhe seeing the damage being caused to our own tanks, withquick reflexes, immense courage and without flinching from heavy enemy fire,charged towards an enemy Rocket Launcher crew. He pounced on the enemy anddisabled the Rocket Launcher. In the process, he was shot with a sten gun at pointblank range, which resulted in the death of this gallant soldier. But before he died hehad silenced the enemy Rocket Launcher, as a result of which the threat to our owntanks was eliminated. For this gallant act of valour and bravery, he was awared the”Maha Vir Chakra”(Posthumously).3.For the gallant actions 15 MARATHA LI was awarded. 01 x MahavirChakra, 03 x Vir Chakras, 03 x Sena Medals, 03 x Mention – In – Despatches andwas also presented with best bn silver trophy for best war results in 11 Corps Zone.
